Thimble End HedgeHogs

Community Hedgehog Heroes helping our spikey friends to make a comeback!

What is Thimble End Hedgehogs?

Thimble End HedgeHogs (TEH) is a local community initiative for Walmley seeking to help improve hedgehog numbers locally. Hedgehog numbers have seen a rapid decline in Britain over the last few decades, and increasingly so in recent years. There are estimated now less than one million or so hedgehogs left in Great Britain - down from an estimated 36.5 million in the 1950's.

There is a real threat that hedgehogs could be extinct in only 10 years!

As development pressures increase locally our small existing hedgehog population comes under further pressure - not least from the recently approved Langley development to our east. Happily, new development schemes are now obligated to include hedgehog friendly design measures into layouts and schemes allowing for improved wildlife connectivity and resilience (July 2019). Our aim is help  similarly improve the hedgehog environment of our existing estates locally by:

a) informing local residents and businesses about the importance of hedgehog / ecological connectivity and providing ideas as to how retrofit small measures into their own gardens and environments to help support our local hedgehog population, and

b) support the work of Hedgehog Street by encouraging the gathering of hog-related information from local residents and businesses alike on their website hedgehog map. The idea is that , the more we know of their whereabouts, the more we will be able to prioritise actions to help give them an environment within which they can thrive.

TEH seeks to urge local residents and employers and landowners alike to make efforts to take 3 key steps towards improving our environment for hedgehogs and wildlife generally. These are:

  1. Create a Hedgehog Highway

  2. Log a Hog

  3. Make a Small Change

We are keen to share to message via this website and associated HogBlog and our facebook page encouraging community interactions. to share the message and, well have some fun as a community, we have a series of HogStones we are tracking via the HogStone Hunt. We have a page set up to share ways in which you can do some Hedgehog Science for yourselves and see if you have a visiting hog in your garden. We also have a new page with downloadable activities for children at Hedgehog Fun!

We would you to get involved, spread the word and together help us put Thimble End and Walmley on the map as a hedgehog friendly community!

Thank you!
